In a market where every DMC claims to be 'the best in Colombia,' how do you distinguish genuine quality from marketing language? The answer, for experienced buyers, is certification. The Society for Incentive Travel Excellence, SITE, is the global professional association for the incentive travel industry, and its certification program sets the international standard for DMC quality, ethics, and operational capability.
What is SITE and why does it matter?
SITE was founded in 1973 and today represents over 2,500 members in 90 countries, including DMCs, incentive houses, hotels, airlines, and corporate buyers. SITE membership is not automatic; it requires demonstrated commitment to the organization's code of ethics, professional development standards, and industry best practices.
For buyers, SITE membership is a meaningful signal. A SITE-certified DMC has been vetted by the industry's most respected professional body, has committed to ethical business practices, and has access to the global network of SITE members, which means better supplier relationships, faster problem resolution, and a higher standard of professional conduct.
The SITE certification framework
SITE's certification program, the Certified Incentive Specialist (CIS) designation, requires candidates to demonstrate knowledge across all aspects of incentive travel program design and delivery: destination knowledge, supplier management, budget control, risk management, sustainability, and client relationship management.
The CIS examination is rigorous, and the designation requires ongoing professional development to maintain. A DMC whose team holds CIS designations has invested in professional development at a level that goes well beyond what is required to operate in the market.
"SITE certification is not a marketing badge. It is a professional commitment. When a buyer sees SITE on a DMC's credentials, they know they are dealing with a company that takes its professional obligations seriously."
— Destinexpo DMC, Managing Director
What to ask a DMC about their certifications
When evaluating a DMC for a Colombia program, buyers should ask the following questions: Is the company a SITE member? How many team members hold CIS designations? Is the company a member of IATA, ASTA, or other relevant professional associations? Does the company carry professional liability insurance? Can the company provide references from comparable programs?
A DMC that cannot answer these questions clearly and confidently is not operating at the standard required for international corporate programs. The Colombian market includes many operators who are competent for leisure travel but lack the professional infrastructure for complex MICE programs.
Destinexpo's professional credentials
Destinexpo is a SITE member and holds memberships in ProColombia's official tourism partner network and the Corporación de Turismo de Cartagena. Our senior team members hold CIS designations, and we maintain professional liability insurance for all programs we operate.
We are transparent about our credentials because we believe that professional standards are the foundation of trust, and trust is the foundation of every successful DMC partnership. If you are evaluating DMC partners for a Colombia program, we welcome the due diligence conversation.
